Solar Panels
Solar Designed for the Way Illinois Homes Use Energy
Every Cox Solar system starts with your actual 12-month electric usage, a detailed look at your roof, and shading analysis — not a one-size-fits-all package. We size the system to offset as much of your bill as makes sense under today's Illinois net metering rules, then show you the numbers in plain language.
We handle the entire project: engineering, permits, Illinois Shines REC paperwork, your utility's Distributed Generation Rebate, interconnection with ComEd or Ameren, installation, and final inspection.

Does Solar Still Make Sense in Illinois?
For many homeowners, yes. Illinois Shines pays for the renewable energy credits your system produces, ComEd and Ameren pay a one-time $300-per-kW rebate for smart-inverter systems, and the state lets you keep your home's assessed value from rising because of solar.
Net metering changed for new customers in 2025 — exported energy now earns supply-only credits — so system sizing and battery decisions matter more than they used to. We model your savings using the current rules, not the old ones.

FAQ
Solar Panels Questions
How long does a solar installation take in Illinois?
Installation itself usually takes one to three days. The full timeline — design, permitting, Illinois Shines and utility approvals, and interconnection — commonly runs 6 to 12 weeks depending on your city and utility.
Do solar panels work in Illinois winters?
Yes. Solar panels produce power from light, not heat, and cold temperatures actually improve panel efficiency. Snow typically slides off tilted panels within a day or two of sunshine, and annual production is what drives your savings.
Will solar raise my property taxes?
Illinois allows homeowners to request an alternate valuation (form PTAX-330) so the solar system doesn't increase their assessed value. We'll point you to the form after installation.
How big of a system do I need?
It depends on your annual usage, roof space, and goals. Most Illinois homes fall in the 6–12 kW range. We size from your actual utility bills so you don't overbuild for today's supply-only net metering.
